2012 Toyota Supra—Mainstream Supercar

Finally, a new chop! This is my interpretation of a new Toyota Supra, a mainstream supercar missing from Toyota's lineup for a decade. I based mine on the über GT, the Lexus LFA. I changed the lower body, tucking it under instead of the Lexus's almost flat sides. The front clip is totally different as well, reflecting Toyota's lower price, lower top speed and more plebian role in life, with larger headlights evocative of the last Supra, and fog lights for more of a production look. I added "normal" door handles, larger taillights, turn indicators in the mirrors, new wheels, and a few other "Supra" details. I like the way this car turned out. I doubt any new Toyota would be as cleanly styled as this, they really have a very bulbous aesthetic these days, but we can always hope! Click image to enlarge.

The original photo I started with of the new $375,000 Lexus LFA. I flopped the photo to place the gas cap door on the passenger side, where I find it more convenient in every day life.

  1. I like yours better...and I agree I like the gas cap on the passenger side. My little VW has turn indicators in the mirrors, which reminds me I have a light out which needs to be replaced. I remember the old days when I could do that myself with a screw driver and new bulb, now it's a major deal to replace the bulbs. Oh and I like Mt. Fuji in the background....serenity now.

  2. thanks! When my parents lived in Japan, my mother told me they could see Mt Fuji from their apartment. She said it was the most beautiful view, having grown up in Connecticut. I have a really nice original piece of art featuring Fuji that they bought while they lived there. I can't imagine staring at a volcano and not being in awe!

  3. Extremely good design, Mr. Shain!
Toyota could use a Mustang/Camaro/ Challenger competitor in there lineup. Toyota are you listening?

  4. This one reminds me of the one from the late 80s-early 90s -- the third generation I think. It seemed really substantial with no connection to the Celica that the orginal Supra sprang from. This one really captures the feeling of the GenIII yet with the unmistakable elegance of a
Casey design. Toyota could do a lot worse (and probably would if left on left on its own) than adopt this as is for a flagship. They could use the good buzz. And the good design.

  5. $375K for a Lexus?? That's more than my house cost! Love the Supra design, Casey. Very sleek. And I agree, Toyota won't come out with anything as good-looking as this!

Mt. Fuji was a very nice touch! (I grew up looking at Mt. Rainier.)

  7. If Toyota hadn't wasted money on the FT-86 and over the top LFA model, they could have developed a really nice Supra by now. Like the illustration with Mt. Fuji in the background and the pagoda from Asakusa.

  8. Anonymous: Why is it shallow? this is a free blog. There are no ads. I make no money at it. The number of clicks I get means absolutely nothing. Do you know of any other way to post photos at Autoblog? Right, there is no other way. What is shallow is coming to my site and bitching about it. If Autoblog has a problem with it they'll let me know and they never have.

Why don't ya finish the front end for us and debut it to the world! BTW, I'm tired of sending the original drawing into Ford, telling them to hire you!
