Connections

Connections to the seasons—Some oak trees hold on to their dried, browned autumn leaves well into winter, not dropping them until the new spring buds push them off. All photo clickable to enlarge.

Connections to the world—Amtrak and MetroNorth railroad lines, snow right up to the top of their rails, connect riders from Maine to Florida.

Connections to each other—A colorized and Photoshop filtered photo of the brambles on Pink Gardens' wild acres, intersecting and weaving their vines into literally thousands of connections. This thicket detail is approximately twenty feet by twenty feet.

  1. I love train travel, I wish we would expand and promote travel by trains more in the United States. Maybe we will some day. Air travel now is like traveling on a bus, only more expensive.

  2. i love trains too. I'd like to take the train across country some time. I've done it by Greyhound bus a couple of times and by car a couple of times.

  3. I ALSO LOVE THE SOUND OF A TRAIN WHISTLE. WE HAVE TRAIN TRACKS ABOUT A HALF MILE FROM OUR DEVELOPMENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE SOUND.SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT BOUGHT HOMES REAL CLOSETO THE TRACKS HAVE A FIGHT GOING ON WITH THE RAILROAD. THEY SAY THE MEN BLOW THE WHISTLE TOO MUCH. WHAT A JOKE. THEY DO IT FOR EVERYONES SAFTY.THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THE SOUND THAT I LIKE.

  5. I've probably seen your back yard a few times, Casey. I used to take the train from Penn Station to the Dedham, Mass station and back all the time when I was first dating my husband. We did that for 3 years. He lived in Jersey and I lived in Boston (Natick). You didn't live there then but it makes me smile to think I may have gazed upon your beautiful yard before!

  6. You've definitely been past Pink Gardens then! My porch faces the railroad, as do a couple of rooms in my apartment. There's even a little train station in town now, for the local line.

  7. I love the picture of the railroad tracks. It's so evocative. We talk about taking the train across the country but it's slow and the nice bedroom (the one that DOESN'T have the toilet right next to your pillow) is so expensive. Maybe when I retire! An ex and I used to travel to the south by train back in the 70s -- Charleston, Columbia, SC, Atlanta. It was very pleasant, even in coach.

Anyway, those are wonderful pictures. Thanks!

  8. I took the greyhound round trip from NY to CA some 25 years ago. The most spectacular part of the trip wasn't the tourist attractions but seeing small towns and cities zip right past you while listening to your favorite soundtrack on a Walkman (cassette variant).
